CAREER ADVISOR
American University Career Center, Washington, DC

Description:

The American University Career Center is seeking a full-time Career Advisor to advise students in the School of Public Affairs (SPA) on a wide range of career issues including self-assessment, decision-making, internships, and job development strategies.  The SPA Career Advisor works with both graduate and undergraduate students.  In order to serve the diverse career interests of SPA students (e.g. government, criminal justice, public administration/policy), the advisor must be familiar with a variety of career fields in public affairs, collaborate with the Outreach and Marketing team on alumni and employer development, and remain up-to-date on employment trends.  Other responsibilities, in collaboration with the other SPA career advisor, include: serving as Career Center contact for school; advising pre-law students; spearheading special initiatives and resource development for SPA graduate students; coordinating targeted programming for SPA students (such as an annual Graduate Student Orientation); acting as a liaison to the Academic Advisors in SPA and developing relationships with faculty; designing new programs for students and marketing those programs effectively. 

This position is located within the American University Career Center which serves all American University (AU ) students except law and business. U.S. News and World Report recently named  AU’s School of Public Affairs the best of its kind in the greater Washington area. Nationwide the Public Administration/Public Management Program is ranked #6 and the Criminal Justice Policy Program is ranked #5.  This career advisor reports to the Director of Experiential Education.  Within the Career Advising Team, the advisor works with nine other career advisors serving other AU schools and colleges. Qualifications:

Master’s degree and three to five years of progressive professional experience required.  Previous experience advising college/university students is highly desirable. Previous experience in a public affairs setting (e.g., local or federal government, Capitol Hill, government affairs, public policy) is highly desirable. Must have up-to-date knowledge of public affairs job opportunities in public, private and non-profit sectors. Must have the ability to function in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.  Position requires strong communication skills, computer literacy and facility with social media, and excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and presentation skills.  Demonstrated ability to interact with students, employers, faculty, alumni, and other constituents is required.  Experience interpreting the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory is desirable.

Requirements: Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, Human Resources Management or related field; 7-10 years progressively responsible work in college or university career development area, with 3-5 years at management level; understanding of career and student development theory, assessment, and professional practices; excellent communication and negotiation skills; and demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with faculty, academic administrators, employers and diverse constituencies. Position:  The Michael A. Ruane Endowed Chair for Business Engagement, Providence College School of Business, Providence, RI.
 

The Providence College School of Business (PCSB) seeks to fill the newly created Michael A. Ruane Endowed Chair for Business Engagement, with a start date of fall of 2011.  Over the next four years the PCSB has committed to rethinking its current curriculum.  The Ruane Chair, filled by an individual experienced in creating and researching curricula that immerse business students in real-world practice, will play a lead role in achieving this goal.

Obligations of the Ruane Chair will include teaching at a one course per semester workload at the undergraduate and/or graduate level; creation and nurturing of faculty research in the area of practice-based learning; maintenance of a personal research agenda and scholarly output commensurate with an Associate or Full Professorship at Providence College; solidification of relationships with members of the business community to create active practice based learning opportunities for students and faculty; chairing the PCSB Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Committee; and the completion of other programs and initiatives designed to bring national recognition to the PCSB and College in the area of practice-based learning. 
A Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree in a relevant field is required.  

The Ruane Chair may be appointed with tenure at the Associate or Full Professor level to a five year term, potentially renewable every five years.

The Georgia Institute of Technology, located in Midtown Atlanta, is ranked as one of the top ten public universities in the nation. After hosting the Aquatics Venue for the 1996 Olympic Games, the university began planning for a state-of-the-art recreation facility. Building onto the Olympic pool, the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) was completed in 2004. A 300,659 sq.ft. building, the CRC is nationally recognized and has received the following honors: Outstanding Sports Facility by NIRSA, Recreation Management’s Innovative Architecture & Design Award, Building Design & Construction magazine’s Gold Award, the Construction Management Project Achievement Award and Design Build Institute of America’s National Award of Excellence.

The CRC is looking to hire a new Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation.  The Outdoor Recreation at Georgia Tech (ORGT) program is one of the many opportunities available at the CRC that is focused on introducing Georgia Tech students, faculty, staff and alumni to the great outdoors. ORGT offers instructional classes in backpacking, rock climbing, mountain biking, caving, sea kayak touring, whitewater rafting, kayaking or canoeing, to name a few, and offers international adventure trips, creating many outlets for the outdoor enthusiast.  

The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation-Outdoor Recreation is responsible to manage the operation, programming, and fiscal responsibility in all areas of ORGT to include: Leadership Challenge Course, Instructional Programs, Wilderness Outpost, Climbing Wall, Tech Treks, international trips, recreation trips, and other extended outdoor adventures.

This position will supervise and advise approximately 120+ student staff and volunteers, as well as one full time employee and one graduate assistant.  The Assistant Director is responsible for developing goals and learning outcomes for this staff including transferrable skills for the student staff.

Duties:The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation-Outdoor Recreation is responsible to manage Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech (ORGT) serving approximately 11,000 user days in FY10. This person is responsible for the operations and programs of ORGT, approximately 120+ employees and volunteers and an annual budget of approximately $150,000.00 plus an endowment of $250,000.00.

Director of Experiential Learning Center
University of Colorado Denver

The University of Colorado Denver (UC Denver) is one of three universities in the University of Colorado system. In 2004, the Health Sciences Center and Downtown Denver campuses were consolidated such that the UC Denver now consists of two campuses with separate geographical facilities: the Downtown Campus and the Anschutz Medical Campus. The Position
The position of Experiential Learning Center Director will be responsible for creating a forward-thinking, futuristic vision for experiential learning for a dynamic research university. The ELC Director will provide leadership in order to design, implement, assess, and manage experiential learning programs in collaboration with academic and student support units that complement the academic mission of the university; lead strategic planning, program development and evaluation initiatives within the ELC; supervise, evaluate and promote professional development for ELC staff, internally manage and work collaboratively on ELC budgets; and develop and promote cooperative relationships with faculty, employers, service organizations, and community partners supporting experiential learning. The Director reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Experiences within the division of Academic Affairs.

Qualifications
The minimum qualifications for the Experiential Learning Center Director position include a master’s degree in a field related to experiential education, and a minimum of five years of leadership experience in a higher education institution within the broad areas of experiential learning. Preferred qualifications include a doctoral level degree in educational leadership or a field related to experiential learning; demonstration of increasing levels of responsibility in areas of experiential learning program development, management and supervision; varied experiences across the different areas within experiential learning; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; experience with software tools used to support experiential learning; experience with fiscal management; experience with risk management and legal issues related to experiential education; contributions to the field of experiential education through affiliation, participation, and presentations through professional organizations; and higher education experience in a public university and/or an urban university.

Executive Director of Experiential Learning

An Executive Director is sought to lead the initiation of an experiential learning program at Mercyhurst College.

The Experiential Learning Program is a new initiative in the Division of Student Life and will initially consist of the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership Development, the Career Development Center, and the Service Learning Center.

The Executive Director will provide vision, leadership, and direction for the Experiential Learning Program and each of its departments by establishing priorities, setting goals, and evaluating performance objectives.  S/he will also oversee the daily operation of the Center for Career Development by implementing best practices in accordance with professional standards.  Additionally, the Executive Director will work closely with alumni and other potential employers to nurture current and develop future internship and employment opportunities for students.  The long-range goal for the Executive Director is to develop a multi-departmental experiential learning program which emphasizes the integration of academic preparation, real-world, hands-on experience.  The Executive Director serves on the leadership team of the Division of Student Life.

A Master's degree in experiential learning, higher education administration, student personnel administration, career counseling, or related discipline is required.  A doctorate or extensive experience in a comparable position is preferred.  Program development, program management, and supervisory experience is required (preferably in experiential learning, career services, student activities, service learning, or relevant program).  Demonstrated ability to implement technological improvements, including centralization of record-keeping, expanding the use of Datatel (the college's student information database), social networking, etc. is essential.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

Develop, implement, promote and evaluate campus-wide internship program; foster positive relationships with students, faculty, alumni and internship sponsors; work collaboratively with Career Center staff to ensure beneficial role of internships in students’ career development.

DUTIES:

1. Direct programs, design systems, and develop policies for university non-credit internships; promote internship program to students, faculty, potential internship sponsors, and alumni.
2. Develop internship sites according to students’ needs and interests; cultivate and maintain professional contacts at internship sites.
3. Conduct internship site visits as appropriate; ensure that midterm and final evaluations are conducted by site supervisors.
4. Meet individually with students to assess their readiness and needs regarding internship participation.
5. Showcase and publicize student participation in internships to build interest among other students, faculty, parents, alumni and other constituencies.
6. Develop internship program manuals/guides, internship learning agreement forms, and electronic and print marketing materials.
7. Provide support as appropriate to faculty and academic departments designing for-credit internships; promote academic internship opportunities to students and facilitate learning agreements, midterm evaluations, and final evaluations as time permits.
8. Arrange and conduct internship orientation meetings.
9. Identify tools and resources to help students become aware of potential internships; maintain accurate records of internship sites, sponsors, and student participation.
10. Implement system of recognition for internship sponsors and participants.
11. Evaluate success of internship program and assess student learning outcomes.
12. Serve as active member of Career Center staff.
13. Attend regional workshops or professional meetings on behalf of the university upon request.
14. Undertake other responsibilities as assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Will exist with students, faculty, Career Center staff, internship sponsors, community agencies, alumni, parents, and student affairs staff.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Responsible for Career Center and Volunteer and Community Service Center staffing, programs, policies and procedures; oversee Career Center and Volunteer and Community Service Center  budgets; collaborate with development and alumni staff to provide outreach events and programs designed to connect current students with alumni, parents, trustees, and others who can offer assistance and support regarding life after Lawrence; oversee pre-professional advising efforts to assist students; ensure successful engagement between current students and supportive alumni.

DUTIES:

1. Hire, train, supervise and evaluate professional and support staff in the Career Center and the Volunteer and Community Service Center.
2. Prepare and administer budget for career and experiential programs.
3. Ensure that career development, internship and volunteer programs are meeting student needs and reflecting current trends in the field.
4. Collaborate with development and alumni office staff to develop, implement, promote and evaluate specialized programs that bring alumni and community members together with students to explore options for life after Lawrence; interact as requested with prospective donors to develop new offerings and programs.
5. Serve as primary contact for career outreach activities designed to connect current students with alumni, parents, and other constituents who can offer career and graduate/professional school advice; identify areas in need of development and work closely with alumni leaders to create appropriate programs and events.
6. Work directly with current students and alumni to develop meaningful interactions that assist students with career and volunteer opportunities.
7. Work closely with faculty advisors identified as pre-law, pre-med, and pre-business advisors to ensure students receive accurate and relevant information about application procedures, programs of study, necessary educational preparation and related career options; effectively use alumni volunteers to help students learn about professional/graduate school and networking opportunities.
8. Ensure that current technology is employed for the benefit of students seeking internships, employment, volunteer opportunities, and career advice and information.
9. Provide accurate record-keeping and files regarding career development, alumni engagement, outreach activities, and student/alumni career information.
10. Serve as active member of the student affairs staff; serve on various regular and ad hoc committees.
11. Attend local, regional and national conferences and meetings as appropriate; represent the college as requested.
12. Undertake other responsibilities as assigned.
